Stella by Starlight

This is a ParsleyPick from Scott

Author of book: Sharon M. Draper
Genre: General Fiction

Here is what happened in the book: Stella Mills, an African American, lives in Bumblebee, North Carolina, during the era of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Her family, like most others, was struggling financially. Racist Ku Klux Klan segregationists plot attacks on the minorities in the town. The KKK burned the Spencer house and nearly killed them. Stella was the hero of this event by going near the fire and rescuing six-year-old Hazel. Stella’s mother was attacked by a snake and the family and their friends speculate that the KKK was behind it. Stella and her African American community refuse to back down. Let me tell you what I thought about the book: The best part of the book was when the African Americans stood up for themselves and went to Spindale, a white community, and voted. I liked that the book emphasized how horrible racism is.

My rating: **** I really liked it

This is a ParsleyPick from Scott

Author of book: Cynthia Lord
Genre: General Fiction

Here is what happened in the book: Catherine, a twelve-year-old girl, desires that her life be common. Her brother, David, has autism, which makes him do awfully embarrassing things, like placing toys and trinkets in the fish tank. Catherine makes a directory of regulations for him, but he scarcely follows them. Then, she meets an unlikely friend , Jason, a handicapped boy. If he is a friend, and he is not normal, what is normal? Catherine then learns that everyone has value, no matter how different they are. Let me tell you what I thought about the book: My favorite part is when Catherine runs Jason around in his wheelchair, in the parking lot. Jason was so happy.

The Hero Two Doors Down

This is a ParsleyPick from Scott

Author of book: Sharon Robinson
Genre: Historical Fiction

Here is what happened in the book: Stephen Satlow, a eight-year old boy is living in Brooklyn, NY and lives a fairly normal life (other than his infatuation for the Dodgers) until he hears news from Archie, his father. An African American family is moving into his all Jewish neighborhood. Because of racism, some of his neighbors are against it. Soon enough, there is word that the tenant is a Dodgers player, and none other than Jackie Robinson himself. As the Robinson and Satlow families grow together, both become more sure that racism is wrong, as in even Jews and African-Americans can become friends. Let me tell you what I thought about the book: My favorite part of the book was when Steve was so excited about going to the baseball game at Ebbets Field. I connect to this by being extremely excited going to my first basketball game.
